If you’re shopping for kratom for the first time, the names can be confusing: red, green, white, Bali, Maeng Da, “ultra enhanced.” This guide explains what those names actually mean, how they relate to how the leaf is grown and processed, and how to use lab results to compare products before you buy.
Kratom is intended for adults 21+. It is not approved by the FDA and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Check the laws in your state before ordering.
What “vein color” means
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. Its leaves have a central vein and smaller veins running through them, and those veins can appear red, green, or white. Vein color reflects the maturity of the leaf at harvest and, in practice, how the leaf is dried and processed after picking.
- Red vein: typically harvested from more mature leaves and often dried longer, sometimes with more sun exposure.
- Green vein: usually harvested at a middle stage of maturity and dried indoors or in shade.
- White vein: generally harvested from younger leaves and dried indoors.
Because drying and processing vary between farms, two “red” powders from different suppliers can test quite differently. That’s why the lab report matters more than the label color.
What regional names mean
Names like Bali or Maeng Da are trade names. Some point to a historical growing region; others describe a particular cultivation or selection style. They are useful for identifying a product line, but they are not a guaranteed indicator of alkaloid content.
- Red Bali Kratom: one of the most widely sold red-vein powders.
- Red Maeng Da Kratom: a popular red-vein trade name.
- Green Kratom Crushed Leaf: green-vein leaf in crushed form, sold in bulk.
What “enhanced” kratom means
“Enhanced” or “ultra enhanced” powders are leaf powders blended with a kratom extract to raise the total alkaloid percentage. Our Ultra Enhanced Green Maeng Da and Ultra Enhanced Red Maeng Da are standardized to roughly 10% total alkaloids, compared with the low single-digit percentages typical of plain leaf. Stronger products call for extra care. Always read the label and lab report.
Leaf powder vs. crushed leaf vs. extract
| Form | What it is | Typical buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Fine powder | Dried leaf milled to a fine powder | Most retail customers |
| Crushed leaf | Dried leaf broken into coarse pieces | Bulk and tea-style buyers |
| Enhanced powder | Leaf powder blended with extract | Experienced customers |
| Extract | Concentrated alkaloids, sold by % mitragynine (MIT) | Experienced customers and wholesale |
For a detailed comparison of extract strengths, see our Kratom Extract Potency Guide.
How to choose: let the lab report decide
Instead of relying on color or name alone, compare products using their Certificate of Analysis (COA). A good COA tells you:
- The measured mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine content
- Results for heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury)
- Results for microbial contaminants like salmonella, E. coli, yeast and mold
- A batch or lot number that matches the product you receive
