Statements about 7-OH and kratom on this page have not been evaluated by the FDA. See the full disclaimer below.
7-OH (7-hydroxymitragynine) is one alkaloid found in kratom leaves, while kratom is the whole plant, with dozens of alkaloids led by mitragynine. In natural leaf, 7-OH is only a trace compound, so 7-OH tablets and powders are far more concentrated and much stronger, milligram for milligram, than kratom powder. That difference in strength shapes everything else: how you dose it, how carefully you use it and how regulators treat it.
Key takeaways
- Kratom is a plant (Mitragyna speciosa); 7-OH is a single alkaloid that comes from it.
- The FDA says 7-OH makes up less than 2% of the total alkaloids in natural kratom leaf.
- 7-OH products are concentrated, so doses are measured in milligrams, not grams.
- Customers report that 7-OH feels stronger and comes on faster than kratom powder.*
- Federal rules for concentrated 7-OH are changing in late 2026, so check current law before you order.
What is kratom?
Kratom is a tropical tree in the coffee family, native to Southeast Asia. Its leaves are dried and ground into powder, brewed as tea, or processed into extracts. People have used the leaf in its home region for generations.
Kratom leaf contains a whole family of alkaloids. The most abundant is mitragynine, and it is the compound most kratom extracts are standardized to (the “MIT” percentage on a label). Leaf strains are usually grouped by vein color (red, green and white), and customers report different experiences from each.* Our guide to red, green and white kratom covers those differences.
What is 7-OH?
7-hydroxymitragynine, or 7-OH, is one of the minor alkaloids in kratom. According to the FDA, it is “a minor constituent that comprises less than 2% of the total alkaloid content in natural kratom leaves.” The FDA also notes that 7-OH binds to the body’s mu-opioid receptors much more strongly than mitragynine does.
Because there is so little 7-OH in raw leaf, the 7-OH tablets and powders on the market today are made by concentrating it, usually by converting mitragynine taken from kratom into 7-OH. The result is a product where 7-OH is the main active ingredient instead of a trace one.
7-OH vs kratom: side-by-side
| Kratom (leaf or extract) | 7-OH | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Whole plant material or a mitragynine-standardized extract | A single concentrated alkaloid |
| Main active compound | Mitragynine, plus many minor alkaloids | 7-hydroxymitragynine |
| Typical serving size | Grams of leaf powder; smaller amounts for extracts | Milligrams |
| Common forms | Powder, capsules, tea, liquid shots | Pressed tablets, powder |
| What customers report* | Effects that vary by strain and amount | Stronger, faster-feeling effects |
| Regulation | Varies by state; many states have consumer protection laws | Facing proposed federal scheduling for concentrated products |
Strength and serving size
This is the biggest practical difference. A serving of kratom leaf is measured in grams, and even concentrated extracts like our M80 kratom extract shots are built around mitragynine. With 7-OH, the active amount is a few milligrams to tens of milligrams. A single 50mg 007 tablet is a strong, concentrated product, not something to treat like a scoop of leaf powder.
How it feels
Customers who have tried both often describe 7-OH as more intense and quicker to come on than kratom powder.* Kratom leaf users tend to describe a broader range of effects that depend on the strain and the amount, with lower amounts often described as energizing and higher amounts as relaxing.* Everyone responds differently, and none of these products is meant to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Forms you can buy
Kratom comes as leaf powder, capsules, enhanced leaf and extracts in powder or liquid form. You can browse them in our kratom and kratom extracts sections. 7-OH is most often sold as pressed tablets, which make each serving consistent, or as powder for experienced buyers who measure carefully.
Safety: why 7-OH needs more care
Kratom and 7-OH both act on the same receptor system as opioids, and 7-OH does so far more strongly. The FDA warns that kratom products can carry risks including liver problems, seizures and substance use disorder. With a more concentrated product like 7-OH, those concerns matter even more. If you choose to use either one, follow these basics:
- Start low. If you are new to 7-OH, try part of a tablet and wait to see how you respond.
- Space it out. Don’t take more than one tablet every four hours.
- Don’t mix. Never combine 7-OH or kratom with alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines or other sedatives.
- Know the risk of dependence. Both kratom and 7-OH can be habit-forming. Daily use builds tolerance, and stopping after regular use can cause withdrawal.
- Adults only. Bulk 7-OH sells only to adults 21 and older. These products are not for anyone who is pregnant or nursing.
- Talk to a doctor if you take prescription medications or have a health condition.
Lab testing matters for both
Since 7-OH is so potent, the amount in each tablet needs to be accurate. A certificate of analysis (COA) from a third-party lab shows what is in a product and how much. We post ours on our lab tests page, and our COA checklist explains how to read one. For kratom leaf, testing also screens for contaminants like heavy metals and microbes, which the FDA has flagged in some kratom products.
The legal picture is different
Kratom leaf is not federally controlled, and its legal status is set mostly by states and cities. Several states have passed kratom consumer protection laws, while a few have banned it.
7-OH is now on a separate track. In 2026 the Drug Enforcement Administration moved to temporarily place concentrated 7-OH in Schedule I. In October 2026 the Department of Justice announced an updated proposal: products would fall under Schedule I if they contain more than 1 milligram of 7-OH per gram (solids) or per milliliter (liquids), or if their ratio of mitragynine to 7-OH is below 100 to 1. The goal is to separate concentrated products from those closer to natural kratom. As of this writing, no final order has been issued, but one could be published soon, and many states have their own 7-OH rules too.
Because the rules are moving quickly, check our 7-OH shipping by state page before you order. We only ship where we can legally do so, and we update that page as laws change.
Frequently asked questions
Is 7-OH the same as kratom?
No. Kratom is the whole plant, with many alkaloids. 7-OH is one of those alkaloids, found only in small amounts in natural leaf. 7-OH products concentrate it, so they are much stronger than kratom powder.
Is 7-OH stronger than kratom?
Milligram for milligram, yes. The FDA notes that 7-OH binds to opioid receptors much more strongly than mitragynine, kratom’s main alkaloid. That’s why 7-OH is dosed in milligrams and why starting low is so important.
Does kratom powder contain 7-OH?
Yes, but only a trace. The FDA says 7-OH makes up less than 2% of the total alkaloids in natural kratom leaf. Mitragynine is the most abundant alkaloid in kratom.
Can I take 7-OH and kratom together?
We don’t recommend stacking them. Both act on the same receptors, so combining them raises the risk of side effects and dependence. Never mix either one with alcohol, opioids or other sedatives.
Is 7-OH legal?
It depends on where you live, and federal rules are changing. The DEA has proposed placing concentrated 7-OH products in Schedule I, and many states regulate it separately. Check our shipping by state page for the latest before ordering.
